READING A HYDRO JETTING ESTIMATE FOR OLDER CAST IRON AND CLAY

Camera first, descaling nozzles, pressure limits and the stop-work rule: what a fair estimate for an older house should spell out.

A good estimate for jetting an older house reads differently from one for a house built in 2008. If the paper says only "hydro jet main line, $450," it has left out the part that protects your pipe. Here is what a fair estimate for cast iron or clay should spell out, and what the quoted numbers can and cannot tell you.

Pressure and Flow Are Two Different Numbers

PSI is the cutting force. It is what breaks up roots, scale and hardened grease. GPM is the flushing force, which carries the debris out. One manufacturer guide recommends roughly 8 to 10 GPM at 3,500 to 4,000 PSI for 2- to 4-inch residential laterals and notes that going above 4,000 PSI is rarely necessary for sewer lines and raises the risk of damaging older clay or fiber pipe. Interior drain lines are usually worked at lower settings, about 1,500 to 2,500 PSI in one plumbing company's guidance.

Trade sources disagree on exact ranges, so treat any single figure as attributed guidance, not a rule. What matters on paper is that the estimate names a ceiling and ties it to what the camera showed.

What Cast Iron and Clay Need

Cast iron can be jetted, but the rust scale inside an old pipe may be holding it together, so the same guide advises working it conservatively, typically under about 2,800 PSI with descaling nozzles. Clay with aligned joints and no active cracks can handle higher settings, roughly 2,500 to 3,000 PSI, to clear roots. Orangeburg fiber pipe should not be jetted at all, and a pipe the camera shows broken or collapsing means we stop.

Eight Lines a Fair Estimate Includes

Line itemWhy it matters
Camera inspection before workShows material, cracks and sags before pressure is applied. Stand-alone camera work is $150 to $300 and is often credited the same visit.
Nozzle typeDescaling and root-cutting nozzles act differently from a plain flushing head.
Pressure ceilingLower for older cast iron and clay, set after the camera.
Flow rate or machine sizeThe flushing force that removes debris.
Stop-work clauseWhat happens if the camera shows a crack or collapse.
Second camera passConfirms the pipe is open and clean.
Written price and what is excludedRepairs are separate. Ours is written and honored for 30 days.
Access pointCleanout location, or whether a fixture must be pulled.

What the Numbers Should Look Like

On our list, standard residential hydro jetting runs $350 to $650, and main line jetting with moderate roots runs $400 to $750. A kitchen line runs $275 to $450. The range moves with line length, access, how heavy the buildup is and whether roots are involved. Most drain jobs we do run $125 to $350, but an older lateral with roots sits at the top of the jetting range. A written estimate that is cheaper than ours is worth a call, since we beat any written quote from a licensed competitor.

What the Visit Should Look Like

The technician runs the camera first, shows you the screen, names the material and agrees a pressure ceiling with you before the jet hose goes in. During the pass, the nozzle is drawn back steadily so the pipe wall gets cleaned instead of blasted at one spot. A second camera run afterward confirms the pipe is open and shows how the wall looks now. If scale breaks loose from an old cast iron wall and reveals a thin spot, the work stops and you see it. That is the stop-work clause in practice, and it is why it belongs on paper.

Red Flags in an Estimate

  • No camera on an older or unknown line, or a camera charged but not shown to you.
  • A single pressure number with no mention of pipe material.
  • "Guaranteed to never clog again." Jetting cleans a pipe. It does not straighten a sagging one.
  • No stated plan for a damaged pipe. If the camera finds a crack, you should be told, not billed for a jet.
  • A repair, lining or replacement pitch folded into a cleaning estimate. We do not offer those services and say so when a pipe needs one.

Using This in Older Brandon Neighborhoods

Jetting estimate questions

On an older or unknown pipe, the camera shows whether it is cast iron, clay or plastic and whether it is cracked, collapsed or sagging. That decides the pressure, the nozzle and whether to jet at all, so the estimate should list it as its own line.

Trade guidance is conservative, typically under about 2,800 PSI with descaling nozzles, because rust scale may be holding the pipe together. Sources vary, so the right answer is a ceiling set after a camera shows the pipe's condition.

It is a line saying that if the camera shows a cracked, collapsed or fiber pipe, jetting stops and you are told. You pay for the inspection and work done, not for a pass through a pipe that could be damaged.

Not if it skips the camera, the pressure limit and the second pass. Compare line items, not totals. Bring us a written quote from a licensed competitor and we will beat it, with the camera and the stop-work clause left in.
